Following in the footsteps of a few notable artists, I have periodically delved into Giotto’s work with whom I feel a natural affinity. This journey was precipitated by a chance find in a book sale of “The Complete Paintings of Giotto” published by Abrams 1966.  As I “strolled” through the pages to Assisi and Padua, I became throughly bewitched by these monumental and profoundly human religious works.

Some of my pieces allude to the same cast and architectural components but, due to the intrinsic nature of the printing process, they are a mirror image of the Giotto paintings.  The perplexities of composition and subject matter are already solved leaving me free to explore and connect with other qualities: the naturalness and equilibrium of Giotto’s constructions, the eloquence, clarity and dramatic intensity of his story-telling, the rich playful detail of the architecture, the symbolism and the dance, “the language of lines” that draws me to Giotto’s work.

“Giotto is the greatest minstrel in the language of lines, the world’s supreme epic painter...”  R. Fry 1909
